Start making plans of 'teaching experiences' for your puppy, sort of like a calendar of events and 'to do list'. Exercises that seem simple to you are not for the puppy. The current mantra is 100 new experiences in the first 100 days! Physical exercise is great but the puppy NEEDS BRAIN EXERCISE possibly even more. Don't forget they love to use their noses and that incredible sense of smell. Start simple and add on practicing multiple times a day. (5 minutes then increase to 10-20 minutes each time). Keep it positive and redirect from unwanted behaviors. Never ever use force or hitting the puppy to teach a lesson your hands and voice should always be a safe haven
A suggestion to use a Dollar Tree calendar or scheduling calendar book. A dry erase board. A check off sheet. Great ideas! I'll work on ideas to give visual examples.......
TODAY IS THEEEEE DAY!!!!!!!!!
Feeding your new puppy and introducing treats:
Start with 1/2c Sundays Beef, you can add ground beef, shredded chicken, cottage cheese or and egg(raw or scrambled) after they have transitioned to your home and stools are normal. They've had a little rice water in each meal.
** Each meal feed a little from your hand , put your hand in the bowl, take away the bowl mid feeding for a few seconds, gently stroke your puppy's back. If they remained relaxed tell them how good they are. If they are not relaxed sit on the floor with them only feed from your hand and gently talk with them.
All good chewing treats should be held by you at first and periodically exchanged for another treat. This is to avoid food possession issues.Today is a good day to start puppy games, teach a behavior and use the food or treat as a reward. My dogs must be sitting quietly and wait for a release before touching their bowl or treat. This is an important game and teaches who is in charge.
For Springers food is a big no it's a HUGE deal. Learning respect for meals and YOU and if you have other dogs in the house it's an extremely import thing with pack order. Don't take it lightly. Don't feed unsupervised especially with others, May be a good first step to feed in the crate if you have other dogs until you understand your puppy's M.O. about food. Preventing issues is much easier than correcting a problem.
No transition to adult food needed with Sunday's; always measure the amounts. Your dogs needs are usually different than the bag recommendation. A lean trim dog is a healthier dog and less stress on growing joints. My adults get 1/2c twice a day. The amount is reduced on training days when lots of reward treats are used. Just like with humans those treats have calories and weight is easy to put on and tough to loose. Balance food amounts to activities and need.
First choice: Sundays
If you're running low increase the add ons beef chicken etc, spare the kibble
I always have a back up kibble if I run out of Sundays and can't feed raw or cooked
Whatever you decide please consider foods WITHOUT synthetics- vitamins, flavors or colors
I periodically get Carna4 not available in pet food stores around me but available thru Amazon (of course)
Kibble: Taste of The Wild Ancient Grains Bison or lamb or fowl fullsizeoutput_181b.jpeg
Freeze dried: Primal beef or turkey screen_shot_2021-02-27_at_5.58.47_am.png
Anything QUALITY limited ingredients. Don't get sucked in with the picture on the package or great advertising. Most great things don't need advertising word of mouth regarding good results is enough.
Foods they've had:
Beef, Chicken, Eggs, Cottage cheese, Plain greek yogurt, Dried mussels
Black raspberries, Green apples, Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Cranberries (NOT craisins- can be harmful,) Pumpkin, Bananas (didn't care for them) They only need a few for good benefits
Green beans, Carrots, Corn, Asparagus

10/13/21:
So last Saturday my mom came to see the girls and I said this is the first litter ever that there wasn't one episode of diarrhea ever! On Sunday that changed and in a HUGE way! They were out in the big yard exploring and who knows what they nibbled on but the 'tootsie rolls became chocolate milkshakes'. Typically 24 hrs and it's over, NOPE not this time. Poor things wanted to eat wanted to play but the 'business' was like puddles. An unplanned vet visit in store for them. The girls are FINE, the sample was NEGATIVE for parasites but to be on the safe side they will go home on medication which is once a day till next Thursday 10/21.If they weren't going home I would have done probiotics. That being said, consider having canine probiotics on hand in case this happens again. Please have rice water to add to their kibble for the first week they are home with you. Here's the recipe to make it rice_water.pdf
Rice water goes bad in a few days so I usually make it and freeze in ice cube trays then store in a bag in the freezer. One cube per meal when any change in their world. Consider using it on vet visit days and with any monthly meds like flea and tick preventions, these seem to cause stress changes in their bodies including digestive issues.

Consider using it on vet visit days and with any monthly meds like flea and tick preventions, these seem to cause stress changes in their bodies including digestive issues.
Common causes of diarrhea in puppies and adult dogs:
- Eating something wrong. Scan your yard for poisonous substances: mulch, mushrooms (esp death cap mushrooms common after lots of rain), toxic shrubs, holly bushes, some weeds, any lawn treatments with chemicals. These can cause upset and many times death in less than 24hrs.
- Immunizations and tick collars
- Foods. food colorings and synthetic vitamins and flavorings. Change in the diet. If you are switching foods do it gradually.
- Stress. New experiences are great but they can be mentally exhausting and when overwhelming can cause digestive upset.
- Water. Especially as young pups take your own water to places. The tap water in your house may not be suited either and may require boiling and cooling first.
Puppies can have loose stools from being stressed and transitioning to your home and family can be a stressor to make that happen. To minimize their GI distress about the changes there are a few things that may help:
- Don't overwhelm the puppy. Keep the first few days low key allowing the puppy to get used to their new home and to you. Lots of people the first week can be too much, your puppy needs to learn YOU and that you are his/her safe place.
- Start a routine and stick to it; adjust as needed but keep things simple. The puppy doesn't need to learn all the rooms in your house the first week try to stick with one or two. Remember the first few nights will be very scary for the puppy, they have no idea that you are their person and will cry for something familiar.
- Collars and leads are annoying foreign objects so start with a few minutes on, NEVER on when in the crate but ALWAYS on when outside or when company is visiting; a dash out the door can be life threatening. Tether the puppy to you the first few gatherings until you know the puppy won't make a dash out a door and won't counter surf the party food tables.Collars on when they are in a crate are a choking hazard, they can easily get caught up and strangle the puppy. Dangling tags can also get caught on crates and floor air vent slats.
Please consider before the puppy comes home:

As my time with the litter winds down and your excitement builds we need to complete some necessary tasks associated with ownership transfer.
The registration has been received by AKC and is listed as 'in process' but I am still hoping the paperwork will be here before Saturday 10/16/21 as of 10/8 the order is marked as complete!. screen_shot_2021-10-08_at_11.17.57_am.png
AKC registrations will be sent in together by me 2 weeks after you are home with the puppy, approximately March 13th.
In the meantime here is some registration requirements to think about for 'Gotcha Day':
Basic Registration: (37.99) Includes registration paper identifying the sire, dam, AKC registration # (dog's SS number, if only it came with benefits)
Silver Package: (53.99) Includes Basic registration AND 3 generation pedigree
Gold Package: (66.99) Includes Basic registration, 3 generation pedigree, training and care video AND subscription to Family Dog Magazine
**Basic and AKC Reunite: (54.99) Includes Basic AND enrollment to AKC Reunite program. This is the companion reunite program should your companion go missing. (This is my recommendation).
The puppies will be microchipped this week.
Your take home bag will include a 4 generation pedigree.
AKC registration fees can be paid with personal check, so bring your checkbook to make a check to AKC or you can provide AKC with a credit card number for the fees.
akc_reg_fees_10_2021.png
AKC Registration names:
As stated on the contract, the AKC registration name will begin with AUBREY. Some breeders will assign registration names but I don't. Coming up with a registration name can be intimidating or confusing. It does not have to but can include the call name you will use for the puppy. The only theme I have kept with this litter is 'Independence' but it is not in my puppy's registered name.
For example:
Call name Delaney AKC Registered name: Aubrey's Make Mine A Double
The meaning behind her AKC name is agility related. 20 double Qualifying scores are required toward an agility champion title.
The new puppy Call name Elizabeth AKC Registered name Aubrey's Longest Reign
The meaning, 2 longest reigning Queens of England, Elizabeth 1 and Elizabeth 2. Long live Elizabeth...
This section will not be completed on the form this Saturday giving you time to spend with the puppy and if you decide on a name and wish to change it there will be no charge for it. Once the registration is submitted to AKC any changes incur a fee.
I will provide information regarding:
feeding schedules
what they've been eating
health exams
tips and guidelines
etc....
I will be here after you go home with your puppy so please don't hesitate to ask questions.
Follow up messages throughout this week.
Write down or send your questions; you may ask something someone else may not think of and they would love that information too.

Sept 30th:
As your excitement increases, I too am very excited for you but as you can imagine I have a little heartache. Thought I'd share some more prepping thoughts.... Most of this will be in your go home packets and available here. I have no plans of going anywhere that I will be unreachable.
The Puppies have been enjoying SUNDAYS FOOD FOR DOGS with a few healthy add ins. I hope you will consider using this product. Either way you will need at least 1 bag of food even if you don't plan to continue using this food. I cannot stress enough the good difference I saw in my Springers, I know it's pricey but less than what we were paying out for itching dogs and yeasty ears, supplements and medicines. There are a few back up suggestions if you should run out between deliveries or want something from a pet food store.
They each have 1/4 cup soaked in warm water till it is slightly soft. You will probably have to adjust the feeding schedule and vary amounts during growth spurts. Please don't over feed your puppy, the recommended amount is usually much more than they need. Busy active days get more food, training days get less because of the treats involved. Overweight puppies stress the joints that are solidifying. Overweight dogs are more prone to health issues and shortened life spans.
Treats. ALWAYS grown in and processed in USA but make sure it is a reputable company too. I have many easy to make, cost effective treat recipes just ask for them if you are interested. Pintrest has a bunch too. I will include a few in your packets as well.
Bedding. Please wait for that comfy beautiful bedding. Teething and learning takes awhile and destruction of things is quite common for a puppy. Delaney did not respect comfy bedding till she was almost 2yrs old.
They have had short experiences in the crates here which was noisy but expected. Find videos on Crate Games; Susan Garrett has a series on Crate Games that many people speak highly of.
Please send your questions, sharing information not only helps you but may help someone else. Just because you have dog experience a refresher of info and sharing info is always great. There's more than one way to do most everything and your idea may be something someone else didn't think of.

Sept 30th:
Time to think about 'Gotcha Day' and what you need to have ready?
Crates. the adult sizes I have are 28x36 I also have 19x30 size which the girls are comfortable in for resting. At this point I would not advise a fabric crate especially for unsupervised time. X pens are like play pens, they come in various sizes and materials but if the puppy is a climber you will need to have a secure top piece. Also don't forget about car travel safety please NEVER allow the puppy to be loose or in the front seat with you. They should be a backseat, secured driver. I'm not 100% but pretty sure there is a law about this. Nonetheless it is a basic extremely important safety thing.
Bowls. My preference is stainless steel since they wash easy, don't stain and don't hold onto food odors. Plastic bowls can become chew toys and the safety of the plastic is questionable. Ceramic painted bowls may contain dangerous paints and sealers and easily crack. The shape is variable. Lola eats quickly so she has a mini puppy bowl with a center bump up. Yeager was eating too quickly and now does well with a 'maze' bowl. Because of the long ears that can ruined by food in them constantly there are 'long ear bowls' that only allow the snout to touch the contents.
Chewies and toys. America processed and made is my only choice for chewies. I do not use rawhides. there is a random nylabone for a quick puppy distraction off my hands or feet but not something left as a chewing treat. Bully sticks, hoofs, antlers, yaks, soup bones (uncooked and marrow removed) are considerations. Be careful with unsupervised chewies that could become a choking hazard.
Toys, watch for small pieces and squeakers. Squeakers have small pieces that puppies can choke on. They love noisy toys the crinkle noise too. An empty water bottle CAP REMOVED can be fun distraction but replace with a new one each play time to avoid plastic cuts. Don't spend lots of money on fabric toys that can be ripped apart easily spreading the inners throughout the house and also can be a choking hazard. We have many toy carcasses that provide countless hours of entertainment.
Tennis balls can be lots of fun, contact a tennis club to see if they have used tennis balls, the chemical on the balls is usually gone from use, they are inexpensive and who cares if they get lost (ha! A springer never loses the ball) or ruined. Careful to replace when they get torn. Plus if you're crafty you can make toys with the tennis balls.
Collars and leashes. You will need several over the puppy hood so don't waste money on that special one till they are at least 1 year old. The first collars and leads should be lightweight and fit snuggly so the squirmy puppy can't get out of it. They will have panic moments and times they will pull back from what you want them to do. the more you pull forward the more they pull back that pull back may allow an escape from the collar. Puppy harnesses are okay but not a great idea to stop pulling during a walk. I do use a harness and a collar the first few months. Flexi leads are not my favorite but I do use them for training, taking out for 'potty business' and walking in special circumstances. A 6 foot lead is the best choice for a puppy to learn proper walking with you.

9/28/2021:
Oh my time is flying by; can't believe I haven't written in some time. All is good here for the puppies and the other canines. Bomber, the conure, is back to himself teasing the k9z. Glad he's okay since he's only 3 yo!
The girls had their evaluations and no surprise they were evaluated as very similar. Their scores were different in 1 value but both were considered ACTIVE, EASY To TRAIN but both will need direction with their energy. Both will need daily exercise including physical and mental.
One was considered more likely to retrieve and interact with toys.
Each girl has their 'moment' of being in charge and dominate with play.
One is a little more 'gentle' (but still feisty) when playing with big sister Elizabeth.
Both will be similar in height and weight as adults.
The more narrow blaze will most likely resemble Elizabeth in looks and the wider blaze will most likely narrow a bit more but still be a combo of Elizabeth and Delaney. Both have similar bone structure underneath the coat and skin.
They both crave people attention, one a little more vocal but that is changing too. One makes sounds one climbs the pen fencing to get to people.
They sleep through the night and 90% of the time they are potty-ing outside. They have water available all the time so the piddling is still happening on the piddle pads in the pen. It's obvious they are getting the outside idea because they are using the pads closest to the pen exit.
Health evaluations tomorrow.
They are both lovely girls and I am thrilled I don't have to make a decision for myself. This is probably one of the hardest moments for me, hoping that everyone is happy. I am blessed to have wonderful families interested in the girls and I don't take that lightly. The puppies are always part of our family and although its the right thing and best thing for them, when they 'move away' they always take a piece of my heart and are never forgotten.

9/15/2021:
The pups were started on kibble yesterday, i would ask that you feed her at least 1 bag while she transitions to your home to avoid any unnecessary digestive stress. We'll talk more about food as it closer to her coming home with you. I would suggest ordering it now so it arrives in time. The company is small and makes to projected orders and with the recent influx of clients they are doing the best they can. Purchase the largest amount you can store safely. I'm big on freezing everything I can to preserve. Food won't last long here but with only 1 mouth to feed I would look at volume cost too if you can safely store it. This kind of food doesn't not preserve for years like the pet food store stuff does. The shelf life is typically 6-12 months.
The food is Sundays

If you go on the website initially it says 20% discount but if you go back without ordering it will change to 30%
If you set up with Jeremy request the 30% discount 'liked you recieved when you were on the website' and order the largest size to get the best deal. I don't get anything but mention my name and hopefully there won't be any shipping delays. He knows about the pups.

Does my pet need health insurance?
For many years my dogs did not have healthcare insurance and I often wonder if rising vet costs resulted from the pet insurance industry. If a percentage was covered would the client be more apt to get a procedure or test done that was optional or avoid it because of cost? And with a partial reimbursement does the client really consider the costs?
If this is the case then those that don't carry the insurance pay much more and that can have a negative impact on the healthcare for the animal. It is a spiral of thoughts especially if you have not be faced with a major costly health issue.
Several years ago 3 of the dogs had theeeee worst diarrhea I had ever experienced. They were quarantined and supported with IV and subcutaneous fluids for several days. Lucky I could do this at home but it was a round the clock care and lasted for weeks since they weren't all sick together. Yeager was given doxycycline for lethargy thinking it was a tick bite and lyme since his bowels weren't immediately affected. He was the only one that 'the issue' wasn't as bad. Arielle and Delaney were spontaneously better in a week or so; at least we thought so. 2 months later Arielle was not well again and a vet visit identified a large liver and by ultrasound multiple liver masses unfortunately inoperable. Diagnosed as liver cancer, given chemo that seemed to weaken her more, she was not improving and given 2 months left. Weeks after Delaney falls ill again. She was recently 'in season' and without pregnancy the risk of uterine infection is high and most times lethal. Emergency vet visit, stat ultrasound and blood work, 'the uterus is fine the kidneys are a mess'! Its either a wicked UTI or renal failure. 6 weeks later was the soonest for a second opinion appointment before starting all kinds of treatment for renal failure. The vet could not find anything to treat but randomly asked about doing a leapto titre. I was complaining about a $245 test but the results were strongly positive for 4of 6 strains of leptospirosis. After spending over 15K for testing, medication, foods and vet visits the treatment for leapto is doxycycline for 10 days at the cost of $45.00 each dog (we had 8 at the time) Arielle perked up on day 2 and gave us almost 3 years more. Yeager has no aftereffects (he was given doxy early) and Delaney has no further issue other than 1 urine test value at the high end of normal.
All of this would have been covered. 3 of the dogs are insured especially since they are athletes and secondly for that unexpected costly illness.
This is why I am food crazy for the dogs trying to give them the most untouched, no synthetic ingredients, best ingredients and user friendly with no cooking, freezing or preparing correct nutrition.
Of course this is your option.
My k9z are covered by Nationwide Major medical with wellness about $1100/yr each. A yearly $250 deductible then 80% reimbursement for wellness and sick visits, lab work and flea and tick prevention. The kick is if there is a vaccine for an illness and you opt out of it and the dog gets the illness there is no coverage for treatment.

You can use the Calendar to schedule a visit or see if there's anything going on with the pups. Of course you can still email, text or call me. This was helpful for me when there's multiple families but since there's only 2 pups I hesitated but decided to put it out there anyway, maybe it will be helpful?
A reminder: please no fragrances, colognes or lotions. Dress comfortably so you can sit on the floor with the puppies.

Please remember you are considering bringing an English Springer Spaniel to your home. These are 'in the house' double coated long hair dogs that shed and require brushing and care between visits to the groomer. There will be fur on the floor, fur that sticks to fabric and there will be days that the wet fur may be unpleasant. This is not a breed groomed by shaving off the fur. The fur has purpose including temperature regulation, protection from the sun, protection from the elements and more. If this bothers you please consider a different breed, I will not be offended if you decide this is not for you.
9/7/2021: 4.5 weeks and doing GREAT! They are busier everyday, watching what goes on outside the pen, interacting with big sister Elizabeth and grandma Lola. They have sniffed at the feline friend Shimmer too! Outside is still a scary place but they are starting to 'play' a little out there too. Transitioning to food but still prefer their momma which is normal at this point. They are using the 'Lixit' water bottles which helps to keep the pen dry, keep them dry and prevents any water accidents.
We look forward to you meeting the puppies. As a reminder please no fragrances, colognes or lotions. Dress comfortably so you can sit on the floor with the puppies.

8/27/21: 3 weeks old and right on track! Responding to sound, looking around, interacting with each other and making noises. Still good eating, sleeping and growing.... They are beginning to potty without help and next weekend will begin the transition to food; I allow Delaney to decide when she wants to wean them. I believe there is much benefit for them to nurse as long as she wants too.
8/25/21: All is well is the whelping pen! Definite progression with sitting, walking, head lifting and vocalizing. Their eyes are opening a little more every time I check on them. They reached the 3 pound mark too, a little ahead of schedule but when there's only 2 it's not surprising. Delaney continues to be theeee most awesome momma, she leaves the pen between feedings but always has an ear tuned in for any whimpers. It breaks my heart when they are fussy and she's trying to settle them she whimpers I swear she is crying for help to fix it! She doesn't like her babies to fuss.
8/20/21: The puppies are getting bigger and doing well. They are now responding to light changes and today I've noticed their little noses twitching when I pick them up. The most critical 'survival' period is almost up but they still need a bit more time before visitors. They have started to explore away from Delaney but their motor skills have a way to go; maybe next week they try out those beefy legs.
8/13/21: Delaney and her girls are doing well. They are eating and sleeping. With Delaney doing such a great job you don't even know they are here!
8/6/21:
They arrived - 2 beautiful girls
Yup that's it, only 2

We are expecting the pitter-patter of tiny paws in the next month!

7/9/2021: Delaney is doing well. A little more sleepy, a little more hungry!
